Drogba seeks damages from Daily Mail following fraud claims

The Charity Commission launched an investigation into the Didier Drogba Foundation in April and have now confirmed that there was no misappropriation of funds

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has confirmed that he is seeking damages from the Daily Mail following the newspaper’s “entirely false” allegations of fraud against his charity foundation.

The Charity Commission confirmed in April that they would launch an investigation after the newspaper claimed that £14,115 of £1.7 million donated to the Didier Drogba Foundation had been used to support causes in Africa.

The 38-year-old subsequently issued a strongly worded statement in which he condemned the story, insisting that there had been “no lies”, while threatening legal action.

The Charity Commission’s inquiry has now drawn to a close and Drogba, emboldened by the outcome, has taken to Facebook to inform his fans that he will be taking action against the Daily Mail.

“The Charities Commission has today confirmed after a seven month investigation, that no funds have been misapplied by my Foundation, and that there has been no financial wrongdoing, no fraud and no corruption,” he wrote.

“I am pleased that this supports what we always said from the start which is that the claims made by the Daily Mail back in April were entirely false. I have instructed my lawyers to seek a full apology and damages to be paid to my Foundation from the Daily Mail.”

Nevertheless, while the Commission is satisfied that there has been no foul play, their report has criticised the foundation for potentially misleading donors.

According to the BBC, the report read: “Donors will have expected their donations to have been used for charitable purposes, not accumulated in a bank account.

“Donors to the English charity may also have been misled about the activities of the charity they were supporting.
