The Subaru Viziv-7 concept has been unveiled at the 2016 Los Angeles motor show, and serves as a preview of a new three-row seven-seat SUV.

Takeshi Tachimori, a Subaru vice president, says that the production version of the Viziv-7 “will be the biggest Subaru vehicle ever.”

The Viziv-7 measures 5199mm long, 2030mm wide, 1828mm tall, and sits on a 2990mm wheelbase.

If the production car’s dimensions roughly match those of the Viziv-7, the big Subaru will dwarf most of its natural competitors, including the 4.85m Toyota Kluger, 4.9m LWB Hyundai Santa Fe, 4.95m Honda Pilot, 5.0m Volkswagen Atlas, and 5.0m Ford Explorer.

Indeed it could well be larger than the already massive eight-seat 5173mm Chevrolet Traverse and 5.1m Buick Enclave.

Subaru hasn’t mentioned what’s motivating the Viziv-7, but the production car will likely feature a version of the 3.6-litre flat-six that’s available in top-end Liberty models, although a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine is also possible.

Aside from a few concept car styling flourishes, such as the carbon-fibre bumpers and wheel arch extensions, and tiny wing mirrors, the Viziv-7 looks almost production ready. The Viziv-7 rides on 21-inch wheels shod with 265/55 tyres.

The production version of the Viziv-7 will become available in North America from early 2018, and will effectively replace the much smaller Tribeca, which was discontinued in 2014.
